Maths no problem chapter 5

Chapter Overview

This chapter looks at length in metres and centimetres before moving on to kilometres. Pupils will learn to measure different items using centimetres, metres and kilometres. They will also be able to convert different units of measurement as well as compare different lengths. The chapter ends with five lessons on problem solving involving length, in which pupils use their mental and procedural skills to solve problems with the aid of the bar model method for visualisation.

English

Our key text for the first three weeks of the Spring term is 'How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth.' We will use this text to help us write a set of instructions.

Does your woolly mammoth need a wash? This picture book will show you how! A little girl, sensibly clad in a yellow mackintosh and red wellington boots offers readers a step-by-step guide to bathing a mammoth, including everything from how to get the mammoth into the tub (try a skateboard or maybe a heavy-duty crane, or even luring him in with a cake) to how to wash his hair. Just make sure he doesn't get any soap in his eyes…

We will be using this engaging and fun text to help us write our own instructions for how to wash our very own mammoth!

For the second part of the Spring term, we will be learning to write information texts using the book 'Find out about the Stone Age.'

Find out how early humans hunted a woolly mammoth, made fire, and created cave paintings in this fascinating book for children about the Stone Age. Stone Age is packed with up-to-date information, fun quizzes, and incredible images of every aspect of Stone Age life. Discover what Stone Age people wore, sample some of their favourite foods, and read about the history of wolves. Look inside the Stone Age, and learn all about the Iron Age, Bronze Age, and the Ice Ages, too. All the information is broken down into bite-sized chunks, and the colourful illustrations bring history to life.

We will use this book to help us write our own information texts about the Stone Age.
