Maths:

Maths at Woodbridge Junior School follows the Maths No Problem Textbooks – This term we are focusing on developing our understanding of geometry. We will be investigating angles on their own, in word problems and in shapes. The chapter begins with us looking at vertically opposite angles before solving word problems involving angles. We will then be looking at angles in triangles and quadrilaterals, using that information to complete a lesson on word problems. Next, we will be investigating the parts of a circle before solving word problems about angles in a circle. We will spend some time drawing quadrilaterals before moving onto triangles. At the end of the chapter, children will be required to draw the nets of 3-D shapes.

 

English:

Our reading focus this term is fill in the gap. Whilst developing this skill we will recap our skimming, scanning and close read skills before looking at fill in the gap questions. To answer fill in the gap questions the children will look at the question for key words that will help them locate the answer in the text. Additionally children will use their knowledge of the text to illuminate multiple choice answers.

Our reading text this term is ‘The nowhere emporium’ by Ross Mackenzie. The Nowhere Emporium is a thrilling and breath-taking book. It begins when the main character, Daniel, discovers a mysterious shop. The dark, gloomy shop was too tempting for Daniel so he started to explore. Before long, the 'shop from nowhere' -- and its owner, Mr Silver -- draw Daniel into a breath-taking world of magic and enchantment.

Throughout the term we will use our reading text to develop our writing skills. We will develop our narrative skills using adjective phrases, a range of clauses and speech so that the children can create their own narrative inspired by Ross Mackenzie’s writing. Later in the term, we will develop our persuasive writing skills to create an advert which will relate to our topic ‘What makes a grand design?’

 

Topic:

This term is our enterprise topic. Throughout the term we will be learning what makes a grand design. We will look at how construction and building has developed through the years and use our history skills to identify historic buildings in our locality. Our previous book ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio gave us all an insight into the various challenges faced by those with additional needs and their family and friends. Therefore we have decided to focus our enterprise project on raising money for ‘The Young Carers Charity’. To begin our topic we will have a guest speaker (young carer) who will talk to the children about what it’s like to be a young carer and how important centres for young carers are to them. This opportunity will allow the children to ask questions in order to develop their design specification. Following this we will have a Teams meeting with a planning manager from Ambergate Council’s planning department. Again, this opportunity will allow children to ask questions to edit their design specification. Once they have created their design specification, the children will create a floor plan which they will submit to the planning officer for approval. Once approved, the children will cost the materials needed and create their own 3D models to submit to auction We will hold a silent auction for parents to bid for their preferred model. Each bid submitted will require a donation of the parents’ choice. All the money raised will be given to the Young Carers Charity.

 

Science:

This term we will be completing our work on light. The children will recap how light travels and what the terms reflection and refraction mean. To finish the topic we will investigate how a prism changes a ray of light to show the spectrum. Finally we will explore how we see colours and how shadows are created and change.

Later in the term, we will start our next science topic – Animals including humans. The children will be able to:

• identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood
• recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function
• describe the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans

 

Computing

This term in computing we will use our knowledge of algorithms and decoding using the application scratch.

 

PSHE

Our focus in PSHE this term is ‘Changes’ We will explore the changes that have happened with our lives so far, what changes there are to come and changes within our bodies.

RE

In our Religious Education lessons we will be learning about ‘What it means to be a Muslim in Britain?’ We will explore the Islamic faith and how Islam has acclimatised to today’s society.
