Maths:

Maths at Woodbridge Junior School follows the Maths No Problem Textbooks – This term we are focusing on developing our skills in measure, ratio and algebra.

 In the first topic, Measure, we will be converting units of measurement using fractions and decimals. We will begin by converting units of length and distance followed by exploring units of mass, volume and time.

Our next topic, percentages, we will be exploring how to calculate percentage of numbers and quantities. We will be learning about how to solve for percentage change and use percentage to compare amounts. In the first lesson, we will be finding the percentage of a whole number. This will involve both division and multiplication skills. We will then move on to finding the percentage of a quantity, measured in amounts such as litres and millilitres. In the third lesson, pupils will be looking at difference and percentage change before finally moving on to using percentage as a way to compare numbers and amounts.

Later, we will be comparing quantities, including numbers, objects, fractions and mass before moving on to solving word problems. In the first six lessons, we will use bar models and concrete materials to compare amounts. We will be using both pictorial and abstract multiplication and division to support their learning while simplifying and comparing ratios. In the final three lessons, pupils will be solving word problems involving ratio by constructing bar models to support their understanding.

Finally wewill learn some of the conventions of algebra in the context of patterns and real-life problems. The chapter begins with lessons describing patterns and using a letter to denote a variable. We then move on to write expressions using the four operations and fractions, while continuing to look for patterns and determine rules. Throughout the chapter, the expressions become more complex, including more than one variable with multiple steps. We write and evaluate algebraic expressions and use formulae to solve problems in real-life contexts. The chapter ends with pupils using word problems to write equations with two unknown values solving a range of equations.

English:

Our reading focus this term is true or false questions. We will continue to develop the children’s skimming, scanning and close reading skills to help then locate specific information to help them answer the questions posed. Additionally, we will be focusing on how to provide evidence to support our opinions, ideas answer which we have inferred.  

To begin our English topics this term we will be reading ‘Beowolf by Michael Morpurgo’.  

Topic:

Our topic question this term is ‘How violent were the Vikings?’ During this topic we will identify when the Viking era took place and where the Vikings originated. We will look at Viking artefacts and discuss what they were used for and what they were made from. We will explore Vikings homes and their lifestyle detailing why they were successful.  

Science:

In science this term we will be learning about Living things and their habitats. To start this topic, we will consolidate our prior Year 4 knowledge looking at familiar animals and their habitats. We will explore how animals are classified based on where they live, what they eat and their features. As we progress throughout the topic we will look at micro-organisms and how we classify them. Finally we will carry out our own scientific enquiry of the local environment and classify the animals and micro-organisms.

PSHE

Our PSHE topic this term is ‘relationship. During this topic we will identify what relationships we have with other, how we can identify healthy and unhealthy relationships and what we can do to support one another through difficulty.  

RE

In Religious Education, we will explore how religions can support people through difficult times and the lessons  religions teach us in order to guide us and support us through life.
