Maths:

Maths at Woodbridge Junior School follows the Maths No Problem Textbooks – This term we are focusing on developing our understanding of number facts, volume and geometry.

The first topic, number facts, will look at prime numbers and how to identify them, we will then move on to square numbers looking at finding the answer to a square number and finding the root of a square number. Finally we will recap Roman numerals and use them to solve problems.

In the chapter Volume, we will be developing their understanding of volume as it relates to cubes and cuboids. At the beginning of the chapter, we will work with concrete materials, where possible, to expose the meaning of volume thoroughly. As the chapter progresses, we will be determining the formula for the volume of cubes and cuboids, estimating volumes and calculating total volumes with a formula. By the end of the chapter, we will be able to solve multi-step word problems related to volume, using division and multiplication.  

This is chapter on geometry in Year 6 will be investigating angles on their own, in word problems and in shapes. The chapter begins with us looking at vertically opposite angles before solving word problems involving angles. We will then be looking at angles in triangles and quadrilaterals, using that information to complete a lesson on word problems. Next, we will be investigating the parts of a circle before solving word problems about angles in a circle. They will spend some time drawing quadrilaterals before moving onto triangles. At the end of the chapter, pupils will be required to draw the nets of 3-D shapes.

English:

Our reading focus this term is Multiple Choice – selecting the correct response from a range of options. We will recap these skills and use them in larger texts to gain a deeper understanding of the text and answer questions using evidence gathered.

To begin our English topic this term we will focus on our chosen author – Michael Morpurgo. We will look at some of the books he has written, his writer characteristics and learn more about his background. We will use the information we gather to write a biography.

Later in the term we will be focusing on our topic book ‘Wonder by RJ Palacio’. We will develop writing techniques using Rainbow Grammar to write a diary entry in the style of the main character. This text will give us many opportunities to explore empathy and mood through written techniques.

 

Topic:

Our topic question this term is ‘What kind of relaxation works for you?’ This topic is a mental wellbeing driver with links to PHSCE and art. We will start the topic exploring how diet can impact our mood and how we relax. We will then look at some techniques we have used during ‘Children’s mental health week’ which support us in having positive mental health. Finally we will explore how artists have used art to interpret feeling and emotion. We will look at techniques to explore mood and look at the artist Picasso. We will then create our own piece of artwork in the style of Picasso.

 

Science:

In science this term we will be Light. We will recap the skills taught in Year 3 and Year 4 and use our previous knowledge to explore factors of light, how light can be refracted and retracted. We will develop our scientific enquiry skills throughout the topic.
