Summer 2: Where is the best place to live, a mountain, a volcano or an earthquake zone?

Geography:

This half term, we will be exploring geography. We will be learning how mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes are formed. We will learning how to use grid references to locate different mountains and volcanoes across the world. We will be exploring different aspects of Italy and looking at the impact a volcanic eruption had on the lives in Pompeii. 

Art and DT:

This half term, we will be exploring different drawing techniques to create an awareness of light and dark, form and texture by extending a piece of artwork originally created by Van Gogh. We will also be learning about key architects and creating a drawing learning about perspective. To link with our Geography, we will be evaluating buildings built for earthquake zones.

Science:

This half term, we will be working scientifically to solve an enquiry question of 'What materials provide the best thermal insulation?'. The children will be planning, carrying out and evaluating their own enquiry. They will have to explore and decide their own variables and methods in which they will carry out their investigation.

Summer 1: What gadgets do we need for space travel?

Topic:

This half term, we will be exploring life in space! We will be learning how astronauts live in space and then we will be researching, designing, making and evaluating our very own space gadget. The children will be following a design brief and drawing their own exploded diagrams in the design stage of their product. They will also then use a range of tools to make their gadget followed by evaluating and presenting their final product.

Science:

This half term, our science topic is earth and space. 

The children will be taught to:

• describe the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the sun in the solar system
• describe the movement of the moon relative to the Earth
• describe the sun, Earth and moon as approximately spherical bodies
• use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky.

Spring 2: What is the best age?

Topic:

This half term, we will be exploring life at different ages. We will be exploring the changes our body goes through during puberty as well as what mental health is and how it is affected. We will be exploring whether lives of adults and children has changed over time and looking at the rights and responsibilities both children and adults have. We will explore how to keep our bodies healthy through our diet and we will be learning how to make and prepare a health snack. At the end of our topic, we will have a debate about what is the best age where the children will share their views and opinions and they will be encouraged to justify their opinions with their new knowledge.

Science:

This half term, our science topic is animals, including humans. The children will able to describe the changes as the humans develop to old age. We will be exploring the development and growth at each stage of development. We will also be exploring the gestation period and how this compares to different gestation periods of animals. 

Spring 1

Topic: Anglo Saxons

This half term, we are learning about the Anglo-Saxons. We will be looking at the Anglo-Saxons time period, where they came from and why they came to Britain. We will be learning about the impact this had on Britain at this time and they fight they had against the Scots to gain control.

Science: Forces

Pupils will be taught to:

• explain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object
• identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces
• recognise that some mechanisms including levers, pulleys and gears allow a smaller force to have a greater effect

Autumn 2

Topic:

Our art topic for this half term will be investigating the question 'Is art the same all around the world?’ Within in, we will be looking at a range of different styles of art and trying to create our own versions of this.

In History, we will be looking at Benin Kingdom. We will learn about how the Benin Kingdom was formed and what art and artefacts have come from that era.

Science:

This term we will be learning about Properties and changes of materials

Pupils should be taught to:

• compare and group together everyday materials on the basis of their properties, including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets
• know that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution, and describe how to recover a substance from a solution
• use knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures might be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating
• give reasons, based on evidence from comparative and fair tests, for the particular uses of everyday materials, including metals, wood and plastic
• demonstrate that dissolving, mixing and changes of state are reversible changes
• explain that some changes result in the formation of new materials, and that this kind of change is not usually reversible, including changes associated with burning and the action of acid on bicarbonate of soda

Autumn 1

Topic:

Our environmental topic ‘Could we survive without the rainforest?’ will be based on learning all about the rainforest and the affect it has on our environment. We will also look at whether our rainforests are being looked after.

In History, we will be looking at Early Islamic Civilisation. We will be looking at the impact that the Early Islamic Civilisation had on academics and how important Baghdad was.

Science:

This term we will be learning about Animals and habitats, including life cycles.

Pupils will be taught the following:

• Describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird.
• Describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals.
