Maths:

Maths at Woodbridge Junior School follows the Maths No Problem Textbooks – This term we are focusing on developing our understanding of fractions, decimals and measurements.

 In the first topic, Fractions, we will be adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. We will begin by simplifying fractions which will then help us to compare and order fractions. Later in the topic we will begin to add and subtract fractions with different denominators, including mixed numbers. We will encourage the children to use concrete fraction bars and bar models to support the children’s understanding before moving on to multiplication and division. The children will learn to divide fractions by whole numbers and explore a range of methods.

Our next topic, decimals will use concrete materials such as Base 10 to support children in reading and writing decimals before moving on to dividing and multiplying decimals by 1-digit numbers with no regrouping or renaming. The children will then learn how to write fractions as decimals using division and pictorial methods before learning how to multiply fractions which involde some regrouping and renaming by 1-digit numbers. The children will recap dividing decimals. However, this time it will involve regrouping and renaming with 1-digit numbers. We will then move on to multiplying and dividing decimals by 2-digit numbers, which involves regrouping and renaming, using a variety of methods and strategies, including: number bonds, the worded method (writing down a problem in words and numbers), long division and the column method.

Finally we will use our knowledge of fractions and decimals in the mathematical topic: measure. Our focus in this unit is converting units of measurement using fractions and decimals. The children will begin by converting units of length and distance followed by exploring units of mass, volume and time.

 

English:

Our reading focus this term is matching – linking information together. We will continue to develop the children’s skimming, scanning and close reading skills to help then locate specific information to help them answer the questions posed. Additionally, we will be focusing on how to provide evidence to support our opinions, ideas answer which we have inferred.  

To begin our English topics this term we will be reading ‘The long walk to freedom’ by Nelson Mandela as part of our Black History week. During this topic we will use role play to explore the difficulties and challenges Nelson Mandela faced in his life time. We will debate some of the issues raised in the book and consider fairness during Nelson Mandela’s life. Finally we will use the ideas, role play and information gathered to write a diary entry as a child or adult living in South Africa in that time.

 

Topic:

Our topic question this term is ‘Is Banksy’s work art or graffiti?’ During this topic we will learn about the history of Banksy. We will use research engines to find out information about who Banksy is. Additionally we will look at Banksy’s art work and infer information about what his art work tell us about the type of person he is. As we progress through the term the children will learn about other graffit artists and their styles. Using the skills such as sketching, tone, light and shade, the children will plan and create their own Banksy style art work to put on display around school. We will be encouraging the children to consider the messages they want their art work to convey – this may link to our previous topic ‘Is pollution effecting evolution?’ Finally, considering some of the evidence and information gathered, the children will debate whether or not Banksy’s work should be classed as art or graffiti. All of the children’s art work will be displayed on an online gallery.

 

Science:

In science this term we will be learning about Electricity. To start this topic, we will consolidate our prior Year 4 knowledge on electricity and recap the benefits and dangers of electricity. As the topic progresses, we will learning how to create complex circuits using a range of different components such as buzzers, lights, motors and switches. We will investigate the impact voltage has on the components and how to use voltage safely. Finally we will use all of your knowledge gained to create a Christmas inspired design which can be given as a gift.

 

History:

Our History focus this term links with our Black History topic – Nelson Mandela. During this topic we will use timelines to map out the significant events in Nelson Mandela’s life. We will compare and contrast what life was like in Nelson Mandela’s life time. How life has changed or compares to 2020 and how life changed within his lifetime. We will consider the actions taken by Nelson Mandela and those who fought for equal rights and how they have changed our lives for the better. 

 

PSHE

Our PSHE topic this term is ‘Being safe’. During this topic we will explore how we can be safe in a variety of environments such as home, the park or online. We will also discuss how we can keep others safe and the responsibility we have in ensuring everyone’s as well as our own safety.  

RE

In Religious Education, we will be discussing the question ‘Is it better to express your religion in arts and architecture or in charity and generosity?’ This topic will look at how religions share their values, beliefs and how they communicate these with the world. As part of this topic we will be looking at the meaning and teachings of ‘Yom Kipper’ in the Jewish community.
