Happy Children Inspired to Learn

Summer Term 2

Topic:

Our topic question this term is ‘Could you survive on an island?’ Throughout this topic we will explore what trade is, specifically looking at the trade links that the UK maintains. We will consider the human and physical geography of islands, then focus on the island Sumatra. We will use our research and enquiry skills to best understand how countries utilise their settlements and land in order to trade with other countries. We will be looking at natural resources and how islands make use of them, specifically how people all around the world access clean water. We will then consolidate all our learning to create a presentation in which children will plan a settlement on a fictional island.

In history, we will learn about the social history of an area of the UK; we will learn how Scarborough became the first British tourist destination.

Science:

This half term we are continuing the ‘Light’ unit; year 6 will learn about light, how we see, shadows, reflection and refraction. The children will learn how light travels and how this enables us to see objects. They will demonstrate their knowledge by designing and conducting their own investigations. They will work scientifically and collaboratively to investigate refraction, carrying out some fascinating experiments into the effects of bending light. Furthermore, they will have chance to predict what will happen in an exciting investigation into the visible spectrum. They will work in a hands-on way to explore how light creates the colours we see. They will also learn about the anatomy of the human eye and how it allows us to see.
