Maths:

Maths at Woodbridge Junior School follows the Maths No Problem Textbooks – This term we are focusing on developing our skills in volume and consolidating previous mathematical concepts taught throughout the year.

In the topic ‘Volume’, we will be developing our understanding of volume as it relates to cubes and cuboids. At the beginning of the topic, we are working with concrete materials to expose the meaning of volume thoroughly. As the topic progresses, we will be determining the formula for the volume of cubes and cuboids, estimating volumes and calculating total volumes with a formula. By the end of the topic, we will be solving multi-step word problems related to volume, using division and multiplication.

English:

Our reading focus this term is sequencing. We will continue to develop our skimming, scanning and close reading skills to help locate specific information so that we can sequence events, actions, words / phrases or information in chronological order.

We will continue to read ‘The Nowhere Emporium’ by Ross Mackenzie however we will be using the text ‘The Viewer’ by Andy crew. We will consider the effects of the authors writing, develop skills in our Rainbow Grammar sessions in order to plan a short story which will then be published and shared with siblings and children in school.

Topic:

Our topic question this term is ‘How do the World’s countries support one another?’ Throughout this topic we will explore how trade has changed over time, specifically looking at the Viking, Tudor and Victorian eras. We will consider the impact past trade had upon Britain’s relationships with other countries. We will use our research and enquiry skills to best understand how countries utilise their settlements and land in order to trade with other countries and discuss the impact El Salvador had upon today’s modern trade. Finally we will pool all of our research and evidence together to hold a parent conference to share the effects of trade distribution and the steps we can take to change the future of trade.

Science:

This term we will be completing our work on light. The children will recap how light travels and what the terms reflection and refraction mean. To finish the topic we will investigate how a prism changes a ray of light to show the spectrum. Finally we will explore how we see colours and how shadows are created and change.

Later in the term, we will start our next science topic – Animals including humans. The children will be able to:

• identify and name the main parts of the human circulatory system, and describe the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood
• recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function
• describe the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans
