Happy Children Inspired to Learn

Summer 1

This term is our enterprise topic. Throughout the term we will be learning what makes a grand design. We will look at how gadgets have developed over time. The children will then go through the design process to develop their own gadget. We will then be making a their gadgets which will develop their design and technology skills. We will use a range of tools and materials throughout this topic.

This term we will be completing our work on Earth and Space. The children will learn all about our solar system and the universe around our world by focusing on the following learning intentions:

  • describe the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the sun in the solar system
  • describe the movement of the moon relative to the Earth
  • describe the sun, Earth and moon as approximately spherical bodies
  • use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky.

Knowledge Mats - Print out these Knowledge Mats and stick them on your fridge or bedroom wall. Quiz your child regularly on the key vocabulary and facts. Little and often helps the knowledge stick.

Our reading focus this term is fill in the gap. Whilst developing this skill we will recap our skimming, scanning and close read skills before looking at fill in the gap questions. To answer fill in the gap questions the children will look at the question for key words that will help them locate the answer in the text. Additionally children will use their knowledge of the text to illuminate multiple choice answers.

Our reading text this term is ‘A Galaxy of Her Own’ by Libby Jackson. This book is full of stories of Women in Space. The book focuses on inspirational women who have influenced and developed space travel.

Throughout the term we will use our reading text to develop our writing skills. We will develop our non-fiction writing skills by writing and non-chronological report about space travel. We will look at structural and language features of a report. Following this, we will be writing a persuasive text to follow the children’s design of a gadget.

Maths at Woodbridge Junior School follows the Maths No Problem Textbooks – This term we are focusing on developing our understanding of geometry, position and movement, and measurements. We will be focusing on translations and reflections on a coordinate grid and developing the children’s understanding of units of measurements. We will be teaching the children to convert between different units of measurements and applying these to problems.

This half term we will be learning to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to create detailed designs of our space gadgets. We will also be using video recording and editing software to film persuasive adverts to sell our gadgets to investors!
