Happy Children Inspired to Learn

Spring Term 2023

Spring 2

This half term in English, we will be creating our own set of instructions on how to make homemade bread. We will explore and use a range of writing features including adverbs of manner, choosing ambitious imperative verbs and exciting adjectives. We will then use our instructions to bake our own bread rolls. After this, we will be creating our own narrative. We will revisit learning such as using inverted commas for speech, adverbs and subordinating conjunctions. We will also learn about how to vary our sentence structure, as well as using adjectives and nouns to create impact. In our Reading lessons, we will be learning new reading skills to help develop our understanding of a text. To do this, we will be learning how to answer multiple choice questions and how to annotate a text.  We will be using a variety of texts to support our learning, including our class reader called 'A Dangerous Game' and poetry from 'The Book of Hopes'.

Poetry

The first half of this term we will be exploring and understanding poetry.

We will explore different types of poetry including sonnets, haikus, limericks and free verse poems. We will look at how they are laid out and our response to the different types.

We will then explore the following literacy devices as the building blocks of our poems.

  • similes
  • ambitious adjectives
  • alliteration
  • adverbs of manner
  • prepositions
  • verbs

We will explore some immersive techniques to help us bring our poetry to life by acting out the verses we have created.

We will model our own poetry on the below Sabre Tooth Tiger poem, writing our own version about a Woolly Mammoth.
