Summer Term 2
Topic: In which country would Mo Farah have the best chance of winning gold?
In topic this term we investigate our way around Europe finding out about the geography of the continent, its countries and capital cities. We start our journey in Ancient Greece 776BC and discover the first Olympic Games and compare this to the last Olympics held in 2016. We look at countries and capital cities comparing and contrasting their geographical features and create a fact file of information across the continent.
Our topic theme relates to Mo Farah and we look at his background and accomplishments and through our investigation and fact finding we ask where he would have the best chance of winning gold based on the geographical features of each city and his training and the demands of his events.
We finish up in Japan, where this summer would have seen Tokyo host the Games of the XXXII Olympiad.
In Science we will be thinking about what is so special about plants. We will remind ourselves of the parts of a plant and learn about their functions. We will explore the requirements for life e.g. air, light, water, nutrients and room to grow. Investigations will include the way in which water is transported through plants and we will conduct experiments to prove this. We will also explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants.
In RE we will be continuing to learn about different faiths focusing specifically on their place of worship, how worship is performed and specific information linked to that religion. Following this we will compare religions considering what is similar and different about them.
In PSHCE we will be learning about difference and diversity. We will focus on the similarities and differences we share with people around the world and develop our understanding that we all are equal to one another. Following this we will consider what discrimination is, what are the consequences of discrimination and how we challenge those who are discriminating others.
Topic: How Do I Keep My Brain Healthy?
This term we will be learning about our brains and their development. We will learn how our brains work and we will identify which side of our brain is stronger. We will explore improving our brains by using new parts of our brains and attempting to learn new things. Art will play a role in this topic as we use Art to help regulate our brains and help us express ourselves. We will look at our emotions and techniques we can use to cope with strong emotions. We will think about the future and set manageable goals for ourselves.
Science: Animals including Humans.
This term we will be looking at Animals including Humans in our science lessons. Over the 6 lessons we will be investigation what links all types of animals, how we can identify them and what they need to survive.
We will be able to identify that animals including humans need the right type and amount of nutrition from what they eat and cannot make their own food and that humans and some animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement.
We will look at:
1. Animal classification - how we can group animals based on characteristics and similarities.
2. The food pyramid - what animals eat and how they link together.
3. Nutrients and diet - what do we need to eat and what a healthy meal looks like.
4. What is a healthy lifestyle? What do we need to do to stay healthy?
5. Bones and Muscles - What are they, what do they do and why they are important?
6. Are athletes different? What makes athletes different from us? Could we all be athletes? What would we need to do to become athletes?
Topic: Chocolate, which one would you choose?
This term we will be learning about the origins of chocolate. We will look into the life of the Maya People and how they used chocolate as a form of money. We will locate the countries where cacao and cocoa plants grow and similarities of the climates in these countries. Trade links between these countries and Western Europe will be explored. We will conduct surveys to find our favourite chocolates and we will use this information to design, make and evaluate our own chocolates.
RE: Why is Easter important to Christians?
In RE the children will be exploring symbols and religious expression. The children will also develop an understanding of the celebration of Easter.
During this topic the children will explore the different emotions we experience, the impact they have on us and others.
Science: Forces and Magnets
This term we will be investigating what forces are and how they work. We will cover magnets, friction and gravity.
Spring term 1
Topic: Could you live in the Stone Age?
This term the children will be developing their historical skills to answer the question above. The children will look at a range of sources, explore chronology and significant events that have occurred in living and beyond living memory to develop a deeper understanding of the period of time. We will have the opportunity to visit Cresswell Crags to contextualise the period of time for the children where we will develop survival skills and develop an understanding of what life was like in the Stone Age.
During this science topic the children will develop their scientific enquiry skills to find out about the properties of rocks and how these contribute towards their uses.
Music: Three little birds by Bob Marley
In our music lessons, using Charanga, we will be exploring a range of music artists and discussing how they have influenced music today. We will learn how to warm up and use or voices according to pitch and begin to look at how instruments can accompany our voices.
In our lessons we are developing our strength, stamina and agility. We are also developing our understanding of team sports and using these skills to compete in teams.
RE: What is the purpose and value of a sacred place?
In RE the children will be exploring symbols and religious expression. The children will also develop an understanding of diversity and the differences and similarities between religious symbols.
During this topic the children will explore different relationships and growing up. The children will develop an understanding of healthy relationships and how to maintain these.
Topic: Can rubbish ever be art?
This term in Topic we are focusing on developing our skills in Art and using our previous knowledge of the environment to create a piece of Art which reflects our interpretation of the world around us. During this topic we will be developing a range of technical skills such as sketching and using a range of materials to create an effect.
Science: Light and dark
This term in Science we are exploring Light using the text Curious Pearl by Eric Braun. During this topic we will carry out a range of experiments to investigate how light travels, how shadows are formed and how they change. These experiments will enable the children to develop their scientific enquiry skills by asking relevant questions, making informed predictions and recording results to conclude their overall findings. Finally we will discuss the dangers of light and how we can educate others to stay safe in the sun.
