English

In English, during Summer term 2, we are focusing on stories from other cultures and non-chronological reports. To start with we will be looking at the Greek Myth 'King Midas and the golden touch'. We will be exploring this text, developing our skimming and scanning, inference and retrieval skills to answer sequencing questions. During our Reading sessions we will be look at a number of Greek Myths identifying the main characters, the order of specific events and how the feelings of characters change throughout a text. Our Reading sessions directly link into our writing sessions and feed our understanding of the genre features, language techniques and text structure. We will be recapping previous work on speech and how to punctuate it correctly as well as noun phrases so that we are able to write double noun phrases. Following this the children will develop their knowledge of different types of clauses, specifically adverbial clauses and non-finite clauses. To finish this topic the children will then use these skills to write their own Greek Myth. 

 

Following the Greek Myth topic, the children will be learning how to write non-chronological reports. This work will link directly to the children's Science topic 'Plants'. In their reading sessions they will be reading the text 'A seed is sleepy' by Dianna Hutts Aston. Then, using their skimming and scanning skills the children will be able to retrieve information to answer sequencing questions. In our writing sessions, we will be focusing on developing our use of paragraphs, conjunctions and adverbial phrases to then write fronted adverbials. Once the children have secured these skills, they will use them to write a non-chronological report about the journey of a seed.

In English, during Summer term 1, we are focusing on fables specifically looking at the text 'The Hare and the Tortoise'. We will be exploring this text, developing our skimming and scanning, inference and retrieval skills to answer fill in the missing gap questions. During our Reading sessions we will be look at a number of fables identifying the messages they convey as well as developing our reading skills to answer fill in the gap questions. Our Reading sessions directly link into our writing sessions and feed our understanding of the genre features, language techniques and text structure. We will be recapping previous work on speech and how to punctuate it correctly. Following this the children will develop their knowledge of adverbs and how we use them to explain where, when or how an action has taken place. This will directly link into writing adverbial phrases which we will use in our independent writing. The children will then plan and write their own fable.

In English during Spring 2 we are focusing on the text ‘Charlie and the Chocolate factory' by Roald Dahl. We will be exploring this text, developing our skimming and scanning, inference and retrieval skills to answer multiple choice questions..During our Reading sessions we will be look specifically at the characters, their character traits and how they compare to one another as well as developing our reading skills to answer multiple choice questions. Our Reading sessions directly link into our writing sessions and feed our understanding of the genre features, language techniques and text structure. We will use the description in this book to help us improve our choice and use of adjectives to create a persuasive poster at the beginning of the term. Later in the term, we will be using our character reading sessions to further develop our understanding of the characters using adjectives and verbs to create impact, adverbial phrases and subordinating and coordinating conjunctions. All the skills taught will enable the children to write a diary entry from the perspective of one of the characters.

In English during Spring 1 we are focusing on the text ‘Stig of the Dump' by Clive King. We will be exploring this text, using prediction and inference to develop our understanding of the text. During our Reading sessions we will be focusing on 'True and False' looking at gathering information from the text in order to identify fact and fiction in relation to the story. Our Reading sessions directly link into our writing sessions and feed our understanding of the genre features, language techniques and text structure. We will use the description in this book to help us improve our choice and use of adjectives and adverbs of time. All the skills taught will then be used to write a narrative at the end of the topic.

 

In English during Autumn 2 we are focusing on the text ‘Alba the hundred year old fish' by Lara Hawthorne. We will be exploring this text, using prediction and inference to develop our understanding of the text. During our Reading sessions we will be focusing on matching, specifically looking at linking pictures with information from the text and identifying key words and phrases. 

 

Our Reading sessions directly link into our writing sessions and feed our understanding of the genre features, language techniques and text structure. Once the children have a good understanding of these areas we will then teach children how to use a range of adjectives, verbs, expanded noun phrases and adverbial phrases. All the skills taught will then be used to write a narrative

In English this term we are focusing on the text 'The Tin Forest' by Helen Ward and Wayne Anderson. We will be exploring this text, using prediction and inference to develop our understanding of the text. During our Reading sessions we will be focusing on retrieving information, specifically looking at retrieving key words or phrases. 

 

Our Reading sessions directly link into our writing sessions and feed our understanding of the genre features, language techniques and text structure. Once the children have a good understanding of these areas we will then teach children how to use adjectives and adverbs to create impact as well as introduce adverbial phrases. All the skills taught will then be used to write a setting description.
