Happy Children Inspired to Learn

Maths - Multiplication and Division

Maths at Woodbridge Junior School follows the Maths No Problem Textbooks – This term we are focusing on developing our understanding of Multiplication and Division including formal written methods of the column method. The children will cover the multiplication and division of 3,4 and 8. The children will the get to use their knowledge to solve word problems. You can support your child at home by practising the 3, 4 and 8 times-tables at home on TimeTables Rockstars, using concrete objects at home or by singing some of the songs on the links below.

As the children progress through the term they will start to develop written methods to solve two digit multiplied or divided by a single digit number. The first lessons look at decomposing a number into tens and ones so that the multiplication is easily managed and pupils can see the concept first using base 10. The children will progress on to regrouping before moving onto Division. Once the children master multiplication and division, they focus on solving problems using the methods taught in previous lessons. Children are encouraged to use concrete, pictorial and written methods to solve problems.

At the beginning of every other lesson, the children will complete 10 questions in 10 minutes (10in10). These will focus on a variety of different skills. Some skills that the children will have learned in previous years, and others that will be recapped from Year 3 learning. These 10 in 10s are aimed to increase children's fluency and speed with mental arithmetic.

Some of the methods taught during these sessions may be different to the way you were taught Maths at school so if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to speak to a member of the year 3 team – Mrs Bates, Mrs Lamb or Mrs Gratton.
